Destination CPA!

Everything you need to know about your remaining time with CGA…

As we near the final sessions of the CGA program, we wanted to take the time to let you know what to expect over the next few months. This guide will provide vital information about the bridging process for graduating, legacy, and transitioning CGA students to the new CPA program.

Are You a Transitioning CGA Student?

Transitioning students are current CGA students who will have course requirements (including PA1 and PA2) remaining after the end of session 4 2014-2015. These students will transition to the CPA program – into either the CPA Prerequisite Education Program (PREP) or the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP). Please see section 1 if this applies to you.

Are You a Legacy CGA Student?

Legacy CGA students are current CGA students who expect to complete all CGA legacy course requirements by the end of session 4 2014-2015, but will have the degree and/or practical experience requirements outstanding. Please seesection 2 if this applies to you.

Are You a Graduating CGA Student?

Graduating students are current CGA students who will complete all CGA legacy course requirements (including PA1 and PA2) by the end of session 4 2014-2015, and will complete their degree and practical experience by the session 4 membership application deadline on November 5, 2015. Please see section 3 if this applies to you.

Section 1: Transitioning CGA Students

You are currently a CGA student, but will have course requirements remaining following the session 4 2014-2015 marks release? We’re working hard to ensure your transition to the new CPA program runs as smoothly as possible! In the meantime, please read the following information so there will be no surprises when the time comes to bridge.

Courses

As of September 1, 2015, current CGA students with course requirements outstanding who are not enrolled in a session 4 course or exam will bridge onto the new CPA program of study. Students enrolled in session 4 courses will transition following session 4 marks release on October 29, 2015 if they still have CGA course requirements outstanding.

  • Bridging students will be assessed in accordance with the CGA to CPA Course Mapping. Our Bridging Assessment Tool can be used to assess what CPA modules students will have remaining following the September 2015 transition.
  • Students can familiarize themselves with the CPA program of study here. The BCCPA.CA website includes program information, fee breakdowns for both PREP and PEP levels of study, in addition to course schedules and prerequisites. We’ll be sending a CPA course scheduling update to all students in August – this will include instructions on how and when to enrol in your first CPA module, in addition to a full breakdown of fees.

Practical Experience

If current CGA students have fulfilled their Practical Experience Requirements for Certification (PERC), their qualified experience will transition to the CPA program and they will not be required to submit it again, unless they do not graduate from the CPA program within the time limits set for PERC files to remain active. If the CGA PERC file should lapse, the CPA Practical Experience Requirements (CPA PER) will need to be completed.

Current CGA students who have not completed their practical experience are encouraged to wait until they have bridged to the CPA program to report their experience through the CPA Practical Experience Reporting Tool (PERT), to avoid the complications that may arise from transferring CGA practical experience ‘In Progress’ into the CPA PERT.

Reporting practical experience is a critical requirement for certification as a designated accountant, both for the CGA and CPA programs. Students should plan to report their experience to the profession on an ongoing basis. Learn more about the two CPA practical experience routes, the mentorship program, how to report your progress, and details about the development of the required competencies on the BCCPA.CA website here.

Degree Requirement

Have a degree? If you have already completed your degree, but simply have not yet submitted it to CGA-BC, please do so as soon as possible. Please have your post-secondary institution forward us an official transcript confirming the completion of your degree, and complete the Request for Degree Completion Form, found under the Schedules, Fees & Forms page of the CGA-BC website. If it is a degree completed outside of Canada, we still require that your post-secondary institution forward us an official transcript confirming the completion of your degree. An ICES or WES report may be required as well. All CGA assessed and accepted degrees will be recognized by the CPA program upon bridging.

Don’t have a degree? Students will still be able to transition to CPA, but will need to complete a degree by June 1, 2020, and/ or before beginning the CPA PEP Capstone 1 Module.

If you have completed all Level 1-3 CGA courses but haven’t yet begun working towards your degree, consider the Laurentian University, Honours Bachelor of Commerce Degree (HBCom). This 120 credit hour degree program provides CGA students with credit for their CGA courses towards the completion of the HBCom degree. Please see the Laurentian University website (www.cga.laurentian.ca) for program requirements and application procedures. The final application deadline to this program will be March 31, 2015.

This March deadline will be the final deadline that CGA-BC will be administering the application process of the Laurentian University (LU) programs. Going forward, LU will assume responsibility for the application process as well as other administrative aspects of the programs. To learn more about this transition, please review the Laurentian University FAQs enclosed. These FAQs can also be found under the Degree Opportunities page of the CGA-BC website.

You may also wish to consider CGA-BC’s Degree Efficiency options, found under the Degree Opportunities area of the CGA-BC website. Please contact these institutions directly for more information.

Section 2: Legacy CGA Students

You are well on track to complete all your CGA courses by the end of session 4 2014-2015, but will still have your degree and/ or practical experience requirement remaining. No problem! The following section will walk you through the bridging process, as it applies to legacy students.

Courses

Students who have completed all required CGA courses (including PA1 and PA2) following session 4 2014-2015 marks release on October 29, 2015 will be able to graduate under the current CGA program requirements, as long as they complete their CGA practical experience and degree requirements as outlined below.

If students still have courses remaining following session 4 2014-2015 marks release, they will be transitioned to the CPA program. Please see Section 1for more information.

Important Exception: Students who only have Public Speaking and/or Business Communications to complete in order to meet the academic requirements of the CGA program, will not be transitioned to the CPA program. They will be allowed to fulfil these requirements in one of two ways: 1) completion of a business undergraduate degree or 2) if a business undergraduate degree was not obtained, then by the completion of equivalent courses taken through an approved educational provider or post-secondary institution. Please see CGA-BC’s online Transfer Credit Guide).

Practical Experience

Legacy CGA students will have until September 1, 2018 to complete the CGA Professional Experience Required for Certification (PERC). Students will continue to refer to the PERC Guides and submit their work experience for assessment through the PERC Reporting Tool.

The PERC Reporting Tool will be decommissioned as of September 1, 2018. If students do not complete their PERC by September 2018, they will be transitioned to the CPA program. Please see Section 1for more information.

Degree

Legacy CGA students will have until June 1, 2020 to complete a degree under current CGA requirements. If students do not complete their degree by that time, they will be transitioned to the CPA program. Please see Section 1 for more information.

Fees

Legacy CGA students working to complete either their PERC (from September 2015 to 2018) or degree (from September 2015 to June 2020) will be required to maintain an ‘active’ student status with the profession. The non-active status will no longer be an available status. The annual fees to be paid, and processes for making those payments, will be provided in August 2015.

Graduation

Legacy CGA students who complete all program requirements for graduation as outlined above, will graduate as CPA, CGA’s pending legislation. More information in regards to the Graduation Process for legacy students will be sent to you by November 2015.
